Marble is one of the most popular stones used for countertops, floors, and vanities throughout the world. However, because it’s a softer stone that’s porous, marble can require a little extra maintenance that first time owners might not be aware of.
To help you keep your marble countertops or flooring looking like new, check out these marble maintenance tips.
Don’t Let Spills Sit Around
Marble is very sensitive to acidic substance so spills with soda, coffee, juices need to be cleaned up immediately. If your spill is lying out there for a long period of time, your marble will be permanently damaged and stained.
Regularly Clean Your Marble
Regularly cleaning your marble can help you maintain the lifespan of your countertops tremendously. Many home improvement stores carry daily marble and stone cleaners that are specifically tested to help marble maintain its finish and feel.
Use Drink Coasters
Bottles, cans and glasses may contain acidic drinks which can etch the polish and damage your marble countertops. Cleaning marble countertops will be easier if you are able to keep all liquids off and coasters are a great way to do just that.
Stains are a part of life but there are a few methods you can try at home to remove stains from marble countertops. You’ll need a wet cloth, some dish soap, baking soda, and water. If you identify a stain you’ll first want to wipe your marble surfaces clean with a wet cloth and some dish soap, making sure the area is as free of dust and other matter as possible. Wipe your marble countertops dry and if the stain hasn’t been removed, mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 quart of water, apply the mixture to countertop and let six for a few hours before wiping away. Keep in mind that your countertops might need to be resealed in places where you do any major stain removal.
